1000 Gears is an open-ended experiment, a gift and a promise, a free and creative place for us to share and enjoy.

It's a virtual glass case for us to show off our polished little flashes of imagination. It's a late-night chat at a 24-hour-diner, where we can take things much too seriously until our thoughts crystalize into insights worth sharing. It's a soapbox blog, where you can stand up and rant about anything and everything - as long as you can be entertaining while you do it.

More than anything, it's a place we want to share with you.

Links Have Changed!

We are all very sorry about this, but the latest version of the 1000Gears software has introduced a new numbering scheme. Unfortunately it makes the site links very ugly, so I took out my hammer and made the website make pretty links again (though they are still different from the old ones).

Unfortunately, the old links do not work anymore. Some of the most popular posts are linked below, but there are quite a lot of them and people link to them in strange ways sometimes. If you have been directed to this post because your link did not work, please excuse the inconvenience and find a working link below. Also, the person who sent you the broken link may not know it is broken. Please be kind and forward the information along, so that the Internet may get by without so many broken links.

Thank you!

Boiling Water

Even boiling water grows cold without a fire.

Real Artists Ship.

Writing is like riding a bicycle. You never completely forget how to do it, but if you stop pedalling, and coast, sooner or later you fall off.

Telling yourself these things is easy; really knowing them is hard. Living them is nearly painful. It’s always been one of the most frustrating parts of my life as a writer: I write in little bursts and pieces, mostly when I’ve just barely woken up and my dreams are still dying in the morning light. Some of my friends can write a few thousand words in a session; I count myself lucky if I clear a few thousand words in a month. Even keeping that in mind, though, having dry spells that long makes me uncomfortable. It’s bad discipline.

I’ve been gone for a month now, and I don’t really have much of an excuse. I let my water get cold. I stopped pedalling for a while, and I fell off.

I’m back, though, or at least I think I am. I have a few projects burning, most importantly the next Tybalt story; I promised someone I would have it finished by YaoiCon.

Sit tight; I’ll try to share something soon.

Please Excuse the Lack of Posting

For the past month or so Adrian has been preparing for a very big exam. He took it on Saturday (it took all of Saturday) and will start posting more again when his brain has finished congealing.

So, please excuse the lack of posting lately, and maybe for another few days.

Thank you,
~Catboy! =^.^=

A Little Change in Scenery

Recently I commissioned some character artwork from Kitty of Kitty’s Tavern, and we turned it into a banner for the website. She’s a pleasure to work with. It’s a little bit of an easter egg (I have a script that offers “alternate” banners about once every five or six pageviews, so pay attention).

That isn’t Tybalt, for those of you who enjoy Tybalt artwork, but you can expect to figure out who it is in a future story. Given my slow output that will probably take a while, but I’d love to hear your speculation if you have any.

Catboy has a hardhat!

So, yesterday, your friendly neighborhood Catboy (this is me) noticed that some nice people had written an upgrade to the software that makes 1000gears work. It was a fairly simple upgrade, but very important to the website, so he (me, again) put on a hardhat and took out a big box of tools and opened up the computer to put in all the appropriate parts. There is a whole lot of stuff in there! Actually the software is very well-behaved and upgraded with only one small problem to the comment system. Fortunately the patented Catboy Bonk on the Head made it behave even better and commenting should be working exactly as expected now.

We are very sorry if there anyone had problems in the meantime.

Thank you,
~Catboy! =^.^=
